Founded in 1919 by Reuben Dent, Ardente Acoustic Laboratories of London was one of the earliest successful manufacturers of electric hearing aids. Based on the technology of the carbon microphone, these early hearing aids suffered from low gain and audio quality but remained in use well into the 1940s, when they were largely supplanted by vacuum tube and transistorized designs.
