Scintillation counters use special materials called scintillators to convert ionizing radiation into light, which is then amplified into a measurable signal using a photomultiplier tube or other sensor. This allows scintillation counters to achieve greater sensitivity than conventional ion chamber and Geiger-Muller detectors and to measure the energy of individual particles. Though the principle of the scintillation counter was developed in 1944 during the Manhattan Project, the practical, portable scintillation counter was invented in 1949 in Winnipeg, Manitoba by University of Manitoba physics professor Dr. Robert Pringle. The first commercial units - including the Model 1002 Gammascint - were produced in the 1950s by Halross Instruments Corporation - later the Western Division of Canadian Aviation Electronics (CAE) Ltd.

While the True North Strong and Free is not typically associated with weapons of mass destruction, for 20 years during the Cold War, Canada was a nominal nuclear-armed power, deploying four different nuclear weapons systems as part of its commitments to NORAD and NATO. However, these weapons were not technically owned by Canada, remaining under American custody under a ‘key sharing’ agreement until released to Canadian personnel in time of war.

Trinitite is glass formed from sand melted by nuclear explosions - particularly the very first, the Trinity Test, detonated near Alamogordo, New Mexico, on July 16, 1945. A diverse mineral found in many forms and colours and containing a witchs brew of radioisotopes, the composition of Trinitite reveals much about the chemistry, physics, and engineering pioneered by the Manhattan Project.
