Hilary Spurling has done it again. After her superb 2-part study of Matisse, she has now turned her attention to Anthony Powell, whose own 12-volume sequence of novels, A DANCE TO THE MUSIC OF TIME, remains a 20th-Century classic.
Growing up with the likes of Evelyn Waugh, Philip Larkin, Graham Greene and George Orwell, this splendid author paid all the usual dues before striking out on his own, marrying well, hitting his stride and becoming the toast of the town.
A sterling biography of a charming man, impeccably written, long overdue and greatly enjoyed.
