The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts is not only renowned for its consistently rich exhibits, but for the elegant books that accompany them.
This classic example, replete with almost 400 illustrations, entirely in colour, joins a long list of distinguished works with the legs to stand on its own. In a Franco-Canadian-American co-production (Yale University is its distributor), more than 20 seasoned authors address such Napoleonic topics as the arts, court life, customs, attire, furnishings, design, tapestries, the theatre, coaches and stabling, the Imperial Hunt and, inevitably. the ill-fated Empress Josephine.
Years in the making, this is a monument to a remarkable show and clearly a labour of love.
