For a long time, scientists thought Australian songbirds had evolved from their Northern Hemisphere counterparts. But, DNA studies flipped that idea on its head.
Not only that, but research has also uncovered that, like hummingbirds, songbirds repurposed a "savoury" taste gene to enjoy sugary foods.
This means Australia didn’t just give the world songbirds — it gave them a sweet tooth too!
