Wombiyan is the word for wombat in the Awabakal Language, whose lands cover the Lower Hunter Valley and lake area of NSW.

The National Reconciliation Week theme for 2024, Now More Than Ever, is a reminder to all of us that no matter what, the fight for justice and the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people will — and must — continue.

This includes recognising and learning from Traditional Knowledge, like names for species like the wombat.

Do you know the name for wombat in the language of your local Traditional Owners? Let us know. 👇

Thank you to the Miromaa Language Centre, who have given us permission to share the Awabakal name for wombat.
