On this week's episode of my @drlouisenewsonpodcast, I’m joined by a nurse called Anna. Anna opened up to me about how it took over ten years and multiple psychiatric hospital admissions before anyone believed that her suicidal episodes were linked to her hormones.

Anna lived with undiagnosed PMDD for a decade. She was dismissed and diagnosed with everything from treatment-resistant depression to a personality disorder, because doctors wouldn't accept and believe that her symptoms were linked with her menstrual cycle. She was sectioned more than once into a mental health hospital. It took a private gynaecologist to finally diagnose PMDD and start her on hormone treatments which really improved her symptoms.

I have heard similar stories to Anna’s so often in my own @newson.health clinic, where women with real hormonal fluctutations and hormonal deficiencies are treated as psychiatric cases instead of anyone thinking about hormone treatments. Anna and I talk about why psychiatry so often ignores hormones, the many differences between progesterone and synthetic progestogens and her three take-home tips for anyone trying to get their mental health symptoms taken seriously.

Listen to the full conversation now via the link in my bio.
