I love my research because of the challenge in putting together different pieces of a puzzle in looking at large scale human data sets. And also the potential to impact the health of individuals in my community. My name is Ani Manichaikul and I'm an associate professor in the department of genome sciences in the University of Virginia School of Medicine. My group performs computational research using large scale human data sets to identify genetic and molecular factors contributing to risk of chronic respiratory diseases. In collaboration with national and international teams of researchers, our group has already identified dozens of genetic markers contributing to risk of chronic respiratory diseases. Moving forward, our goal is to translate these findings by examining the genetic, molecular, environmental, and ancestral factors contributing to risk of chronic respiratory diseases, ultimately allowing for better prevention and treatment of these diseases for patients in Virginia and beyond.
