I hate video games that make rooms dark so you can't see anything. So the lamp is easily my favorite secondary item so far.
If you're wondering why I left the Desert Dungeon again, it's because the dungeons aren't self-contained like Zelda. I had to look up the official hints to figure out where the red key was.
