The day has finally arrived. Well, at least the night before. For so many years I never envisioned leaving California, and yet here I am on the eve of our departure to Austin, Texas. Leaving everything that has grown normal to us...the majestic hills, the bay, Karl, our friends, family, favorite spots, and the place where Rock With This was conceived. Tomorrow we begin a new adventure...to start a family, make new friends, be closer to family (my side), and to take the biggest risk yet, to try and turn Rock With This into the greatest music brand in the world. As one of my best buds quoted at our goodbye dinner..."Fortune favors the bold."
Early last week I began thinking what song would be right for this post. I needed an all-encompassing monumental melody that summed up my last 14 years in the Bay Area. One that not only helped pen the final page of this life chapter but also served as fuel for the rocket ship to my next novel. A song that was equal parts thoughtful, inspiring, and energetic. I had a couple masterpieces in mind - this being one of them - but decided to dig a bit deeper and hit "shuffle" on our Curators Playlist. And as synchronicity has guided me since I decided to TRUST, out of the 642 songs, this one came on first. A track that I listened to probably 20 times on a drive from SF to Vegas during the pinnacle of my transformation - the first time in my life where I knew, and felt, that everything was going to happen exactly as it was meant to. And everything was going to be alright.
I arrived in San Francisco via Atlanta in May 2005. I was a man seeking, very much in need of purpose, and yet I had little idea how lost I truly was. It wasn't until 2008 after a failed relationship and the decision to leave the corporate world to start my nonprofit A Good Idea, did my real life begin. The decision to finally be selfless, opened up a whole new world.
"I've got a lotta, whole hell of a lot to say, Even if it hurts sometimes - A perfect life for a perfect brand new day, And we're the next in line - So if you're here and you're curious tonight, Take a chance 'cause I know you want to"
I finally had purpose...to bring people together to experience soul-quenching moments while serving the homeless members of our community. I found community - a group of amazing people who either led me to or are some of the most meaningful friendships that I'll ever experience. I discovered my spiritual self - leading me to a 13 year journey packed with the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. And I found the love of my life - after numerous relationships with wonderful women, I finally met the most wonderful of them all. I credit Eckhart Tolle's 'The Power of Now' as "waking me up" and my wife Kira Moler Paul as "settling me down".
"Valkyrie Missile" absolutely nails how I'm feeling in this moment. The ethereal intro beaming with emotional synths launches me into a mind-flight of glorious reflection. The riveting rhythm track gets my heart pounding, my blood flowing, and my soul inspired. And that soaring U2-inspired guitar riff sets the stage for a poignant lyrical onslaught that just had to be written for these very moments.
"If only you'll hold on, just hold on, I'm here and I'm with you, I'm here too, I feel you, We'll get through, I know this"
So many decisions, moments, experiences, and people led me to this evening. With my wife laying next to me, utterly exhausted from a brutal week of packing, we rest amongst cardboard boxes of artifacts from our past and sit with minds swirling with dreams of what just might be.
"I know this, I've seen it, A hundred times, a thousand times, Just one more time, With you and I, I'll pull you close,
And then we'll say goodbye..."
Goodbye California. I will forever be in love with you.
