In the 17th episode of The Nicene Creed Series, Vladyka Alexei explains why the phrase " And I Believe in the Holy Spirit", was included by the Holy Fathers and why it is relevant to All Orthodox Christians!
"We have completed the major part of the Creed dealing with the Father and the Son. Now we turn to the third person of the Holy Trinity, the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Truth, the Governing Spirit."
"This article in the Creed is about belief in life, in spiritual life, and in God providing us with the spir-itual oxygen our souls require by shedding the love of God “abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit which is given to us” (Romans 5:5). Saint Seraphim of Sarov once summed up the goal of the Christian life as the acquisition of the Holy Spirit. He said, “Prayer, fast-ing, vigil and all other Christian activities, however good they may be in themselves, do not constitute the aim of our Christian life, although they serve as the indispensable means of reaching this end. The true aim of our Christian life consists in the acquisition of the Holy Spirit of God.”
Vladyka Alexei's flock is scattered among the vast lands of the State of Alaska, and for anyone that has traveled in the state, especially to the villages, knows the cost of traveling is VERY expensive. To give you an idea of how much it costs to get out to the villages, if you wanted to buy a box of laundry detergent, that would cost you a whopping $80! Now put that into travel costs for a flight out, lodging, food, etc, It is quite staggering.
