In this Episode of the Nicene Creed Series, we look at the phrase, "To Judge the living and the dead".

"The Creed is a universe unto itself that stretches out all of time from beginning to the end and punc-tuates it with Christ. And where there is Christ, there is the ultimate answer to the yearnings of the human heart. To those troubled by the unfairness of life, the Creed is a source of consolation. To those disturbed by dishonesty and falsehood unchecked, it is a bed-rock of truth. And to those who slumber in careless-ness and waste their days in aimless pursuits, it is a clarion call to watchfulness. This is especially true in the teaching that Christ is to come again in glory to judge the living and the dead."
"The fathers of the church have always interpreted Christ’s second coming and judgment based upon a completely different set of criteria concerning Chris-tianity as a way of life that reshapes the heart, rather than an ethical code of conduct to which the mind adheres. In this scenario, judgment concerns union with Christ during this lifetime. Perhaps the most appropriate tool for understanding this judgment may be found in the church’s troparion of the Mid-night Office: “Behold, the Bridegroom cometh at midnight, and blessed is that servant whom He shall find watching, and again, unworthy is the servant whom He shall find heedless. Beware, therefore, O my soul, do not be weighed down with sleep, lest you be given up to death, and lest you be shut out of the Kingdom. But rouse yourself crying: Holy, Holy, Holy, art Thou, O our God, through the Theotokos have mercy on us.”'

Bishop Alexei's flock is scattered among the vast lands of the State of Alaska, and for anyone that has traveled in the state, especially to the villages, knows the cost of traveling is VERY expensive. To give you an idea of how much it costs to get out to the villages, it typically is more expensive for one to travel from Anchorage to the village of Kwethluk, which is roughly 390 miles, than it is to fly from Anchorage to Chicago, or Anchorage to Hawaii. A round trip air fare ticket is over $1,000, a staggering price for a Bishop to minister to his flock with an episcopal visit.
