Mayor Zohran Mamdani is supporting a bill that would establish new protections for delivery workers and increase oversight of companies operating delivery warehouses in New York City.
The Delivery Protection Act, sponsored by City Council Member Tiffany L. Cabán, would expand licensing requirements for warehouse operators. Supporters say the measure would improve safety, training and access to resources for drivers, many of whom work for contractors rather than directly for companies such as Amazon.
Amazon says the bill could disrupt its agreements with more than 40 local delivery contractors and put over 5,000 jobs at risk. The company warned that it may have to move some delivery operations outside the city if the legislation passes in its current form.
Amazon has invited City Council members to visit one of its delivery stations and meet with contractors before voting on the proposal.
