Tasmanian independent senator Jacqui Lambie has called on the federal government to abandon a proposed $5,000 cap on allied health services for veterans, accusing Labor of disregarding their health and wellbeing.
The cap is due to take effect on 1 July 2027, although veterans will be able to apply for additional funding. The changes also include higher fees for allied health providers who treat veterans.
In an emotional Senate speech on Wednesday, Lambie described the policy as unfair and urged the prime minister to reverse it.
“I’m begging you, prime minister. We are already suffering enough. Drop the bloody cap. Drop it, mate,” she said.
Lambie also spoke about her own health problems, saying she experienced a vaginal prolapse six months ago, followed by a bladder prolapse three months later. She said the conditions were directly linked to back injuries she sustained while serving in the Australian Army and accused the Department of Veterans’ Affairs of failing in its duty of care.
