with staffs, spears, halberds, partisans - polearms it is not a good idea to strike with crossed arms. Also fore hand strikes have a lot more power because of the body structure behind it.
This drill for the Pertusian is from Matthias Schlüter a German fencing master from Renaissance Germany. Those martial arts drills are done in HEMA today.
