This performance by Canada-based Hindustani vocalist Akhil Jobanputra is part of the Kishima Arts Foundation-curated FIRST LIGHT series featuring young musicians presenting rarely performed repertoire of Indian classical music, accompanied by interesting stories of their lineage.
The video begins with a short introduction of the series by Hindustani vocalist Priya Purushothaman, followed by a brief introduction of the performing artistes by a contemporary colleague of their's, Harmonium player Saumitra Kshirsagar.
Akhil Jobanputra then commences his performance with three compositions in Raag Miya Ki Malhar, which he studied under the tutelage of his guru Pandit Arun Dravid.
Uncommonly sung in the Jaipur-Atrauli gharana, the rendition features two compositions which Arun-ji received from his first guru, Ustad Abdul Majid Khan Saheb. The paramparik 'Karim Naam Tero' here is set in vilambit Ada Chautaal, followed by a bandish that Akhil himself composed to reflect the rainy autumn in his hometown of Vancouver, concluding with a rendition of another paramparik "chiz" entitled 'Ke Ladali' in drut Ektaal.
Akhil is accompanied by Swapnil Bhise on tabla and Vanraj Shastri on sarangi. Tanpura support is provided by Jayant Naidu.
The concert was held at a wonderful bookstore in South Mumbai called Kitab Khana who graciously granted us permission to use their premises.
