Asar Imhotep | Afro-Asiatic: It's Time to Hang it Up @AsarImhotep | Uploaded 11 months ago | Updated May 12 2024
Join me on Nia (Thursday) June 1st at 2:30 PM Eastern Standard Time at the Mbongi as we discuss the newly released text Ancient Egyptian and Afroasiatic: Rethinking the Origins (2023), Edited by María Victoria Almansa-Villatoro and Silvia Štubňová Nigrelli. This text is the outcome of a linguistics conference in April of 2018 of the same name. The description of the text states (in part): "By challenging assumptions regarding the proximity between Egyptian and Semitic Languages, Ancient Egyptian and Afroasiatic provides a fresh approach to the relationships and similarities between Ancient Egyptian, Semitic, and Afroasiatic languages." But we argue that it does not and only confirms what Obenga (1993), Mboli (2010), and others have been arguing for decades: "that Afro-Asiatic is not a valid construct." I will highlight some key features of the text and give my preliminary opinion of the aspects of the text I have read thus far. So please bookmark your calendars, like, and share this link with friends and colleagues.
