In this video tutorial from 2Dgameartguru.com I will show you an easy way to create cutout shapes for a layered illustration with outlines.
In this video, I explain the use of symbols for symmetry, use simple shapes and lines with solid strokes, and expand those later to create the different colour shapes. These are combined to form colour layers with increasing cut-outs.
Most of the functionality shown in the video can be created with other software tools such as Adobe's Illustrator, CorelDraw, or Inkscape with minor alterations and different names for the tools used.

As part of the challenge on the Facebook group Inkscape - hands-on I recorded my workflow when creating designs based on basic shapes. I create this fishmongers store using shapes - circles, rectangles, and stars - with added text elements. Most of the shapes have solid fills [I did cheat a little and used a few gradients] and use shading shapes inside clip groups for detail and depth.
Reusing, duplicating, and modifying existing elements speeds up the creation process.
