A playthrough of Nintendo's 1995 puzzle game for the Nintendo Game Boy, Adventures of Lolo.
In this video, I play through the entire story on the Super Game Boy. If you'd like to skip the "Entry level" (tutorial) stages, jump to 27:49. You can find the post-game Pro puzzles at 3:11:04.
Not to be mistaken for the 1989 NES game of the same name (youtu.be/VLwg5qI-wj4), Adventures of Lolo for the Game Boy is the direct follow-up to youtu.be/KToSCkOWYUk.
The 1994 Japanese release (ロロの大冒険, lit. "Lolo's Big Adventure"), published by Imagineer, had fifty puzzles and was structured similarly to the first two NES games. The 1995 European release - what you're seeing in this video - was a heavily expanded take on the Japanese game. Neither were released in North America.
The differences are significant: this version features 144 puzzles split across a multiple difficulty levels, a tutorial mode, new cutscenes, a help feature, upgraded music (some of the music will seamlessly shift to reflect the way Lolo is currently facing!), and full Super Game Boy support.
It plays like the earlier Lolo/Eggerland games, but the movement speed and playfield size have been scaled down to accommodate the Game Boy's screen. This change simplifies the puzzle designs a bit, but it still puts up a good challenge. It's not as sadistic as Lolo 2, but the difficulty in the later stages feels about on par with Lolo 3's.
The presentation is pretty nice, too. The graphics are a downgrade from the NES, of course, but everything is clear, the cute illustrations for the maps and cutscenes are well done, and the music (composed by Manami Matsumae, who did the soundtrack for youtu.be/PxyLui5LdCc) is upbeat, cheery, and memorable. I also got a kick out of the weird selection of level themes.
I mean, what sane person would set a Lolo stage in an amusement park named "Gentry Land"?
The cramped screen dimensions take it out of the running for the best-in-series prize - I'd personally give that trophy to youtu.be/FPawp7ObuOU - but I wouldn't place it far behind Lolo 1 or 3. It's yet another excellent Lolo game.
