When faced with the decision of taking either Ethan or Olivia to the escape pod, you can crouch and do a roll towards them to make the other character appear inside of Gideon as he crouch-walks around, which also has the benefit of being faster in a speedrun.
In 1-E, approach either Ethan or Olivia and crouch down. Roll toward them so that you collide and the animation plays where Gideon picks them up, and he should immediately revert to his crouched position. Simultaneously, the other character takes the same position, crouching in the same space as Gideon and following his actions precisely.
This is likely just a small oversight in the way the game differentiates standing and crouched states, but it's actually quite useful because it speeds up the route to the escape pod. Crouch-walking is about 16% faster, reducing the required time to get to the escape pod by a little over a second. For something so easy to do in a forced section, it's a solid improvement.
In addition to that, the appearance is hilarious, because when merging with Ethan, Gideon's face flashes between being clean-shaven and having a goatee, not to mention the changing suit. When paired with Olivia, he looks like he has an extra pair of arms.
There are alternatives to this method, such as fist slamming into Ethan to get boosted toward the stairs a little more, but any improvement from that would be lost because of having to stand while helping him to the escape pod. While fist slamming skips the initial animation, this is basically guaranteed to be faster -- if not as fast -- as any other way. Plus it's freaky.
