The Australian Government has released the Delivering the Future Estate: Defence Estate Audit Report, in response to the independent audit of the Defence estate.
Our nation currently faces one of its most challenging strategic environments. The Defence estate – the land that our personnel live, train and work on, and where we build and maintain our capabilities – is critical to our national security.
The recent Defence Estate Audit found that the Defence estate is large, ageing, costly to maintain and not effectively serving Australia’s strategic interests. The Government has accepted the recommendations of the audit in what will be a significant reform to the Defence estate, divesting or partially divesting sites around the nation – sites that have been identified as not being needed for current or future capabilities.
Many of these sites have immense meaning to current and former serving personnel, and we will be using this process to preserve history and enhance public access to sites of historic importance, so all Australians can celebrate our proud military history.
