Instant Kill Mechanics are a divisive staple feature commonly seen in many turn based RPG games, and tend to attract a rather mixed reception among many players, for often understandable reasons.
Why do people hate them? Why do people like them? What makes them fun? What makes them UN-fun? For such a seemingly straightforward mechanic, there's a deceptive amount to depth to discuss regarding them.
What exactly is the thought process which goes into designing such mechanics in the first place? And how do game designers (attempt to) balance the concept of "instantly kill the target" in a way that makes meaningful gameplay sense?

![Game Designer Explains: Why Replayability Matters (for certain games)
The potential to replay a game is a pretty big deal to some people. That said, it isnt always a good thing.
For some games, replayability is simply just a natural part of their games fundamental structure and core design, and even creates design challenges which the game developers need to overcome.
Lets examine some of the intricacies of replayability in this video.

Normal is the most important Type in all of Pokemon.
It fulfils numerous important responsibilities which the other Types do not, and is practically the central lynchpin which the entire Type System is built upon.
This video is an analysis of the game design behind such a normal attack, and what exactly that entails for a game as a whole.

![Game Designer Explains: The Influence of Achievements
Achievements are a feature of video games which are so omnipresent, they have become an effective part of the landscape of gaming as a whole. By this point, many players have gotten so used to their existence that theyve began taking their presence for granted.
But as with every other feature in games, achievements are created and implemented in order to encourage certain player behaviours, with different kinds of achievements being used for a range of purposes.
In this video, well discuss about some of the different ways game developers can use achievements to structure their game, manipulate player behaviour, and engage with users in ways that extend beyond just games. We will go over a few different types of achievements and the respective effects they can have on users.

![Why Ground is the Most Boring Pokémon Type [arche-Type Talk]
Wait, its all Earthquake? (Always has been).
The Ground Types design is exactly as its namesake implies: consistent and ever unchanging, even as everything else around it has changed. While this makes it consistently excellent from a competitive perspective, it also ends up being extremely boring to analyse from a design perspective as well.
Well, in for a penny, in for a pound I suppose. Lets have a look at Grounds (lack of) evolution across the franchises 30 long years of existence.
