As we know in Australia, if an Aboriginal person dies in custody, the media treats it as a tragedy and a “national shame.” They certainly treat it more importantly than if a non-Aboriginal person dies in custody.
Take for instance this article published last week on the ABC: “Young Aboriginal woman mourned after death in Tasmanian prison custody.” Of course, they have a special news category “Black Deaths In Custody”. It goes without saying that there’s no “White Deaths In Custody” news category. Within the article, they have the obligatory “WARNING: This article contains the name and image of an Aboriginal person who has died.”
As I said in a video from last year, “ABC Entertaining Indigenous Superstition ‘Out of Respect’,” this warning message is extremely racialised. Apparently no other group of people in the world need to be warned about the names and images of dead people—at least, not according to the editors of our ABC.
So, here’s the Aboriginal woman that died: 21-year-old Chelsea Bracken. First of all, I’d just like to make clear that I’m not here to speak ill of the dead. What happened to her was a tragedy, and I’m not here to critique that.
Although, as I clearly showed in a video from last month “Stop Lying About Aboriginal Deaths in Custody,” per 100 prisoners, Aboriginal people in prison custody are significantly less likely to die than their non-Indigenous counterparts. For example, in the latest data from the Australian Institute of Criminology from 2024, the death rate over the last couple of decades averaged approximately 0.20 per 100 non-Indigenous prisoners, compared to 0.13 per 100 for Aboriginal prisoners.
For Aboriginal people, you’d think that would be cause for celebration, but the ABC would rather push the victim narrative.
But back to our article. Actually, the focus of this video isn’t on the death in custody statistics, but rather something that a number of you sent in—something that’s obvious, but something that Australians aren’t allowed to talk about out loud: the fact that the Aboriginal woman pictured onscreen who died in custody has blonde hair and fair skin. And as I said, I’m not here to speak ill of the dead, and no disrespect to her family, but if I saw this photo without context, I would have guessed she was from Iceland.
And I’m not even having a laugh; I think the ABC is having a laugh by publishing a piece with this photograph and telling us that she’s Aboriginal. Do you honestly think the person who wrote the article, Madeleine Rojahn, didn’t think the same? Of course she did, she just didn’t say it out loud. Now, I know, we’re not allowed to talk about this, but why not? Isn’t so-called truth-telling all the rage nowadays?
Obviously, this style of identity politics—where physical appearance is dismissed as irrelevant—only occurs in the most woke circles of Western countries. It would never fly in, say, China or Mongolia. I’ve been to both, and there’s no way they would play this kind of identity politics game.
Are you telling me that in China they would even entertain the idea that Steve shown onscreen, who grew up in Adelaide and happens to have a great-grandfather who was Chinese, is Chinese? That wouldn’t fly, because Steve doesn’t look Chinese. Despite his love of noodles and dumplings, and his once-a-month attendance at his university’s Chinese movie night, he’s Australian, and that’s all there is to it.
And actually, the same is true in Australia. If Sarah claimed she’s Nigerian because one of her long-lost ancestors is from Nigeria, and goes around wearing Nigerian clothes and identifying as Nigerian, there’s no way even the ABC would entertain that. That would probably be classified as cultural appropriation, or other such nonsense. In Australia, it seems to be only people with Aboriginal descendants who can claim to be Aboriginal, despite looking nothing of the sort.
Are you telling me if you showed a picture of Ms. Bracken to people in a remote Aboriginal settlement in the Northern Territory they would identify her as Aboriginal? Not a chance!
But here in the woke realms of the ABC and other Western media, we are simply expected to sit back, ignore what our eyes are telling us, and pretend everything is normal here in Australia. It seems that as long as someone identifies as “Aboriginal” then they’re Aboriginal, and we all have to pretend that it’s a legitimate claim.
