“A Winter’s Morning” was a reflection on a time and place that I hold near and dear to my heart. We had just moved to Lawrence, in the South Island of New Zealand and I was immediately struck with a different subject and a unique light.
It was brisk, but it didn’t stop me from busting out a little plein air study of this scene this one morning. As I sat with the final study, I realised it needed sheep to complete the story.
When I made the bigger version, I planted weed, thistles and really mucked up the farmer’s field. Grass eaten down to stubble isn’t great to paint, just saying.
In the time since, a house was built here and the main tree was chopped down. Glad I was there to see it, and document this magical morning… I might have to paint a summer version now. Who knows. I might even go bigger!!!
Should I? Hmm…
