Bill Bryson decided to go for A Walk In The Woods, specifically from Georgia to Maine, the entire length of America's Eastern Seaboard, along the celebrated Appalachian Trail. Fearing bear attacks, poisonous snakes, wolves, moose, spiders, ticks, crazed hillbillies, lightening strikes, poisonous foliage, and any number of other life-endangering hazards, he took along an old friend for company - possibly the least reliable and most incapable person on the planet, besides himself. And he documented the entire expedition in a book that is at once hilariously funny and also genuinely exciting and adventurous.
Bill Bryson is a writer of surpassing skill and quality, with a turn of phrase that is guaranteed to amuse, a deep sense of sarcasm and dry humour that makes every one of his books a joy to read. And for those very same reasons, his books don't translate well into films, as demonstrated by the attempt to adapt this book, A Walk In The Woods, into a comedy adventure film starring Robert Redford and Nick Nolte. It failed to capture the magic of Bill Bryson, because his magic is in his prose, more than the subject he is writing about.
