"Another Way of Living" -- Cross Keys Village - The Brethren Home Community -- Nestled on over 300 acres of Adams County in Southern Pennsylvania, Cross Keys Village - The Brethren Home Community offers a new way of retirement living for its 1,100 residents. It's a retirement village that provides the full range of care for its residents, including single family homes, duplexes, apartments, independent living and nursing care.
Like many of the other 21 Brethren Homes scattered around the country, Cross Keys Village is filled with countless opportunities for activity and ongoing life experiences.
This ''Brethren Voices'' program hosted by Brent Carlson, features some of the activities that residents and volunteers have been enjoying over the years. The first segment features the ''stampers'' who twice weekly, get together to process US postage stamps. Cancelled stamps are sent in bags and boxes to Cross Keys Village by folks from all over the country and ''world.'' Volunteers process the stamps, to be sold to a stamp dealer in New York City. Funds are raised for special equipment used in the village.
''Brethren Voices'' also features the Annual Boat Regatta which takes place on the lake in front of the village. These special boats, made from cardboard and milk cartons are raced across the lake. The event ends when all are sunk, except for the winner, which is still ''seaworthy.''
Featured in this program is the Apple Butter Festival which is a tradition of over 35 years, where apple butter is made the old fashioned way, in copper pots over an open fire. Another featured story is that of the visiting dogs that are included as therapy dogs of Cross Keys Village - The Brethren Home Community. Special dogs visit the independent living and nursing care areas of the village, providing residents with a ''special relationship'' that can only happen with one-on-one contact with a friendly pooch.
