Mike Stern and Bill Jolliff were featured performers of a concert in support of the World Friendship Center, Hiroshima, Japan. This concert is featured in the February 2022 edition of Brethren Voices.
The World Friendship Center was founded and dedicated by a Quaker, Barbara Reynolds in August 1965. It continues as a center for building friendships and promoting peace in a world without nuclear weapons. Dr. Tomin Harada, a Hiroshima surgeon who was the first honorary chairman of WFC called Barbara, "Kashin," or "Hearing from Flowers." The term "Kashin" is associated with someone who sows seeds, but lets others enjoy the results of his/her deeds.
Mike Stern's song, "As If the Flowers Knew," is joined with the scenes of the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, to make a music video. The "flowers of the day" are the youth who learn of the tragedies of war and are transformed into peacemakers, who bloom for the next generation.
