A new underwater technology is giving seagrass meadows, and the Reef, a chance to recover at scale. Meet Mako, an uncrewed underwater vehicle (UUV) with a purpose-built planting attachment designed specifically for seagrass restoration. Developed by Ulysses, the robot can map the seafloor and plant seeds with precision, using small robotic drills to place seeds directly into the sediment.
What is seagrass used for? These underwater forests play a powerful role in keeping the Reef healthy – providing food, resting and breeding grounds for marine life like dugongs and sea turtles, absorbing and storing vast amounts of carbon, improving water quality and stabilising sediments.
