It was an underwater snowstorm on the Great Barrier Reef overnight.
Coral spawning gifts new life to our Reef releasing enough eggs and sperm into the water to produce trillions of baby corals. Calypso Productions were out at Moore Reef off Cairns to capture the moment these tiny balls exploded into the water.
This amazing natural phenomenon represents a critical window for us each year to scale up restoration efforts and regenerate corals that have been lost to warming ocean temperatures. While the majority of us slept last night, tourism operators, researchers, Traditional Owners and marine scientists were out on the water making the most of the once-a-year event.
