In this edition of Reef Snapshot, we showcase two breakthrough coral restoration innovations changing what’s possible on the Great Barrier Reef.
Discover OSCAR (Machine One), a semi-automated system developed with McLaren Racing to dramatically scale the production of coral seeding devices — with the potential to increase coral planting from 100,000 to one million each year.
We also share early results from larval seedbox trials held in the Whitsundays during spawning last year, where coral settlement rates were found to be 100 times higher than natural levels — offering new hope for faster, more effective reef restoration. This trial was led by CSIRO and supported by Southern Cross University in partnership with the Australian Institute of Marine Science and local stakeholders. The trial is supported by Qantas through the Great Barrier Reef Foundation and uses technology developed under the Reef Restoration and Adaptation Program (RRAP).
