Researchers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory have developed a tool condition monitoring system that uses tactile sensing to accurately measure cutting tool wear. In this video, a tool’s cutting edge presses against a flexible sensor to capture detailed surface data, which is analyzed in real time to detect wear and damage.
The system delivers consistent measurements in seconds—independent of lighting conditions—with up to 98 percent accuracy, enabling manufacturers to better time tool replacement and reduce downtime.
