This is one of my favorite fugues. I can’t quite explain why, but I have the feeling I must have heard it somewhere in my childhood. I recorded and published it before, but since I’m planning to perform it in concert next week, it was time to dust it off and see whether it was still under my fingers. Fortunately, it was!
Since I recently acquired the beautiful new Hauptwerk sample set of St. Margaret, Munich, I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to make a fresh recording and, this time, include the scrolling score as well.
I simply love this work by the somewhat neglected French composer Alexandre Pierre-François Boëly (19 April 1785 – 27 December 1858). During his lifetime, he was often regarded as old-fashioned by the Parisian musical establishment because he admired the contrapuntal style of earlier composers such as J.S. Bach at a time when musical tastes were moving in a different direction. Today, however, his music is increasingly appreciated for its craftsmanship, depth, and timeless beauty.
