I love rediscovering forgotten organ music, and this time I found a real Victorian treasure.
This beautiful *Postlude in B-flat by Humphrey John Stark (1854–1932)* has virtually disappeared from today’s organ repertoire. It deserves to be heard again.

*About the composer*
Humphrey John Stark was born in *Reading, England,* in 1854. He studied with *Julius Benedict and Sir John Goss,* worked as an organist in London, and helped establish the *Trinity College of Music.*
After emigrating to the United States in 1886, he adopted the name *Humphrey John Stewart (H. J. Stewart).* He became one of America’s leading organists, serving churches in *San Francisco* and later becoming the *first Civic Organist of San Diego,* where he gave public concerts on the magnificent Spreckels Organ in Balboa Park.
Stewart was also a founding member of the *American Guild of Organists (AGO)* and remained an influential figure in American musical life until his death in 1932.
Although his American career is reasonably well remembered, much of the music he composed during his English years has been forgotten. This charming Victorian postlude is one of those hidden gems.
