Today I am delighted to present my very first recording on the brand new Châlons-en-Champagne, J. Abbey Organ sample set by Sonus Paradisi. This magnificent French Romantic organ stands in the Cathédrale Saint-Étienne in Châlons-en-Champagne, a historic city in the Champagne region of northeastern France. I bought the set within a few hours of the release and made this recording immediately after installing.
The organ was built by John Abbey in 1849 and later enlarged by his sons. It is one of the finest examples of the French Romantic tradition, combining remarkable warmth, power and refinement. The spacious acoustics of the cathedral complement the instrument beautifully, allowing every detail to blossom naturally.
For this first exploration I chose Élévation from Dix Pièces pour Orgue by Théodore Dubois (1837–1924). Dubois, a student of Ambroise Thomas and later director of the Paris Conservatoire, wrote organ music that is elegant, lyrical and deeply expressive. An Élévation accompanies the quiet moment of the Mass following the Consecration, and this piece captures that atmosphere of serenity and contemplation perfectly.
I immediately fell in love with the beautiful, subtle string stops of this new sample set. They possess an exceptional warmth and intimacy that make this gentle music sing in a truly captivating way.
