One of the biggest hits from the sentimental waltz ballad genre, 1900’s, “Bird In A Gilded Cage” was “the key that opened up the doors of wealth and success” for it’s writer, Harry Von Tilzer. The story goes that Von Tilzer tested the song out by playing it in public, and after finishing the song and seeing a number of women crying, he was convinced that he had Tin Pan Alley’s hottest (saddest?) and newest song in his hands.
