92 Morning Run
1
I was 55 years old
And I was running still,
You know, in age-group competitions,
As long as there weren’t too many hills.
2
I wasn’t real fast in high school,
Nor in college for that matter,
But maybe I’d outlast the guys who beat me then,
Leaving the record books in taters.
3
But it didn’t happen,
The same guys who beat me then,
If they were still kicking,
They all beat me once again.
4
But then I realized it didn’t matter,
Twelve of my class were already pushing daisies.
The fact that I was still running at all,
Proved I was alive and wasn’t lazy.
5
Then I reminisced about
Those old roads I once ran on,
Nine miles through the country side.
Three laps for a marathon.
6
The next time I visited Vevay,
With my plan firmly in place,
I’d run that high school course again.
And we would make it an official race.
7
So, in 2002 I toed the line
Against me and nobody else.
I guess I wasn’t as slow as I thought I was,
As I was beaten by my high school self.
