While visiting my Aunt I met her grandson,
He was talking to friends, not complaining,
As he wore his uniform loud and proud,
Mark was fresh from Basic Training.

Mark had two weeks of recruiting duty,
To put out hometown information,
The Army will make you faster and stronger,
And a chance for further education.

He then took out a glossy folded paper,
The headline was “Land of the Free,”
Then on the back of the paper it said,
“Be all that you can be.”

Mark’s friends were now looking up,
“Do you wear the uniform all the time?”
“No, just while on duty,”
“That’s why I’m still wearing mine.”

He then dug out his Basic Training Year Book,
Detailing all training aspects,
Then a glossy picture of Charlie Company,
In formation on the company steps.

One of Mark’s homies pointed to the picture,
And asked as if bemused,
“Which one of these guys was your friend?”
Mark was not amused.

“I mean you must have made some friends,”
“You’ve been at basic training since fall.”
Mark looked at the picture thoughtfully,
“We were in it together and of course I liked them all.”
