18 Apple Pie
Green Apple Stomach Ache

It must have been pretty bad,
And based on a mistake,
That you only make at nine years old,
A green Apple Stomach Ache.

Visiting Dad’s hometown,
Spending two-weeks on the farm,
I skipped a stone on the flooded creek,
Then crossed over to the barn.

That is where I found it,
An old apple tree,
Which was yellow green and bug eaten,
But good enough for me.

I took what I could carry,
And I headed myself back,
Very proud of my discovery,
Next time I’ll bring a sack.

On the path I met my Grandma Chase,
She was bringing in the cows,
Those are good enough for apple pie,
But I wouldn’t eat them right now.

She said they’ll make you very sick,
But I was ready for the test,
I’d finish eating what I had,
Then go back for the rest.

I staggered to the outhouse,
My stomach sounding the alarm,
I spent the day fighting spiders,
And I never went back to the barn.

So if you find an apple tree,
Regardless of the season,
If nobody else is eating them,
Then there must be a good reason.
