45 The Bottom of the Wishing Well

I’ve got to tell you I was troubled,
Looking down the well with a stare,
Letting my eyes adjust to the dark,
And then I saw him floating there.

I was back in Indiana,
And the well head at the farm was gone,
I could see a ripple on the water,
That seemed to me oddly wrong.

A frog had fallen through the well head,
Into the dark water below,
And to me it was a calamity,
That only that frog and I would know.

That little frog would never feel the Sun,
Or ply for insects at the shore,
And he didn’t have a place to rest,
He had to swim for evermore.

And that water was much colder in the well,
Than the water in the creek,
Then I saw him try to make it up the side,
But he was growing weak.

Then suddenly happy to be back on the farm,
To give that frog some hope,
I found a rusty coffee can,
And tied it to a length of rope.

I finally got the frog out,
It took me half the day,
And do you think that frog thanked me?
No, he was scared and just hopped away.
