Rummaging in the Tech Closet with Mike:
See how easy it is to create your own Microsoft XR app in Unity & Visual Studio 2017, share/sideload, or even upload it to the Windows App store. Just $19.95 for Windows App (personal) developer get you into the door.

Basic steps for creating a Microsoft Mixed Reality App in Unity 3D
Download and install the latest beta of Unity (2017.2.0b8), make sure to select the two Windows .net options (as well as any other platform you want to build for)

Download and install the latest WIndows Creator SDK

Once Unity 3D is installed, go back and add the UWP Workload to the Visual Studio 2017 Installer (make sure Unity 3D Workload has been installed as well). Look in ‘Individual Components’ and make sure NuGet Package Manager has been installed.
Change to Developer mode in Settings/Update & Security/For Developers

Locate the Mixed Reality Portal from the Start button and start it.
Select add Developer mode in the bottom left corner.

Once Developer mode is installed click on the ‘For Developer’ button to enable headset (only if you want to run the simulator, not necessary if you own a developer Mixed Reality headset)
Wait till the “Cliff Room” starts and get familiar with the controls and then shut it down.

Launch Unity, log in or create an account if you are new to Unity
Create a new project or import an existing one.
Go to Build settings and ... (No plug-ins or _____ are needed.)
Press the Play button and you should see the Mixed Reality Portal launch, if not go back to design and launch the Mixed Reality Portal manually. Now press play again. The Mixed Reality should switch over to your project. When satisfied, go back to development.
Click on Build and make the following changes… The press Build select a directory or create a new one (use iterative naming convention). When build has completed successfully, go to the directory the build was created in and find the xxxx.sln file and double click on it.

Visual Studio 2017 should launch. Once you are at the VS’s main screen change your build to Release & x64, Local Machine and then press the Play button. When build is completed successfully it will launch into the Mixed Reality Portal and create UWP app on your PC.

To create an app you need to create a Microsoft UWP developer account (personal is $19.95, business in $99.95)
Register an app name.

Package for the Windows Store

Find the directory and right mouse click on the Windows
Powershell script and launch it. Follow the instructions to install it. NOTE: You much at least allow for side loading apps or activated developer mode in Windows 10.
