This is the shorter, straight-to-the-action version of my comparison between a 357 Magnum and a 44 Magnum for wilderness protection.
One argument often made in favour of the 357 Magnum is that its lighter recoil should make it quicker to shoot, particularly when rapid follow-up shots might be needed. Rather than simply debating that question, this video lets you watch the two revolvers being fired side by side and compare their actual shooting speeds for yourself.
The footage comes from Proof Of Proficiency testing I underwent in connection with my Canadian Authorization To Carry a handgun in the bush. Canadian regulations require appropriate firearms-proficiency and use-of-force training before an Authorization To Carry can be issued in the applicable circumstances.
In the testing shown here, I was required to draw the handgun from its holster and fire six full-power rounds within a 20-second time limit while maintaining the required accuracy. The tests were conducted at 5, 10 and 15 metres, from both standing and kneeling positions, with the shots required to remain within the specified target area.
For this video I've stripped away most of the discussion and simply synchronized footage of the 357 Magnum and 44 Magnum being fired so you can watch the two guns in action at the same time and judge the difference for yourself.
The comparisons appear to point fairly consistently toward one conclusion. But be sure to watch right to the end, because the final rapid-fire sequence adds an interesting qualification that shouldn't be overlooked.
