After 48 years with the Smith & Wesson .44 Magnum, I have come full circle.

In this video, I look back at my long history with the .44 Magnum, beginning with the first blued Model 29 I bought in 1978. That revolver led me into reloading, bullet casting, regular handgun practice, metallic silhouette competition, and eventually practical wilderness carry as a licensed trapper.

I also talk about the Dirty Harry influence, the early Canadian handgun licensing process, the cost of factory .44 Magnum ammunition, my years shooting IHMSA metallic silhouette, and how trapping brought the .44 Magnum back into a very practical role.

More recently, because of my occupational need as a trapper, I was able to acquire a Smith & Wesson Model 629 with a 4-1/4 inch barrel under the narrow transfer exception that still exists under Canada’s handgun freeze. That purchase brought me right back to where this whole journey began, only with 48 years of experience behind it.

This is not legal advice. It is simply my personal story and experience as a Canadian firearms owner, shooter, bullet caster, reloader, competitor, and licensed trapper.

I would love to hear your own .44 Magnum story in the comments.

Did you buy one because of Dirty Harry?

Did you use one for hunting, wilderness carry, silhouette shooting, or collecting?

Or did you fire a few rounds and decide somebody else could enjoy it?

Let me know below.
