🔥 32 Embarrassing Facts From 1 Samuel
What up, YouTube? It’s your boy, Adam of NOLA.
Welcome back to God-Free Bible Study.
We finished another book of the Bible — and that means it’s time for one of our favorite traditions here on Skepticus:
The greatest hits.
Today, we’re looking back at 1 Samuel and breaking down 32 facts that are objectively embarrassing for anyone trying to claim this book is divinely inspired, morally profound, historically reliable, or worthy of being treated as holy scripture.
Because 1 Samuel has everything:
👉 A child “loaned” to the priesthood forever
👉 Samuel being born into what is basically priestly servitude
👉 Yahweh deciding to kill Eli’s sons before they can listen to correction
👉 God getting associated with an ark that can apparently be captured
👉 Tumors, war trophies, naked prophecy, and divine regret
👉 The people being blamed for wanting a king after corrupt leaders fail them
👉 Saul being chosen through what looks like a rigged religious lottery
👉 Yahweh regretting Saul
👉 David being anointed king… and then not becoming king
👉 God tormenting Saul with evil spirits
👉 Saul forgetting who David is
👉 David running what sure looks like a protection racket
👉 David wiping out villages to cover his lies
👉 The Witch of Endor calling up Samuel from the dead
👉 And everyone pretending that throwing sacred stones is somehow different from divination
This is not a clean moral story.
This is not a polished theological masterpiece.
This is a messy, violent, contradictory, superstitious ancient text full of corrupt priests, failed kings, divine tantrums, genocide, magical objects, folk religion, and leaders who somehow get praised while doing horrifying things.
And yet millions of people are still told to treat this as sacred truth.
So let’s talk about it.
If you’re a Christian and you think I got something wrong, don’t just rage in the comments — call in.
Every Tuesday at 5:00 PM Central, we do a live call-in show right here on the channel. It’s free to join, free to call, and if you think I misrepresented Yahweh, Samuel, Saul, David, the Witch of Endor, or anything else in 1 Samuel, you are more than welcome to come tell me.
Special thanks to all the Skepticus members. Your support helps keep this channel going, and it means more than you know.
Until next time…
Lo, I say unto you:
Stay skeptical.
