If your paintings look muddy or dirty, it usually comes down to a few basic mistakes:
1. Messy sketch
Starting with a rough sketch doesn’t make your work more expressive—it just makes things harder.
For most artists, a clean sketch will save time and make the painting process easier.
2. Weak values
A lot of people go straight into color and ignore values.
If your light and dark structure isn’t solid, adding color will only make it worse.
3. Too much airbrush
Overusing soft brushes makes everything look blurry and undefined.
This usually comes from avoiding hard edges.
Fix these three things and your paintings will already look much cleaner.
