🚩Ever feel like your watercolors turn out a bit frustrating, patchy, or just not as beautiful as you imagined?

It could just be these 3 very common beginner mistakes:

1️⃣ Paper choice matters more than you think

If your paper isn’t made for watercolor, you’ll be fighting it the whole time.

Look out for:
Warping and buckling
Uneven, splotchy washes
Colors that look dull instead of vibrant

👉Try this instead:
100% cotton watercolor paper
At least 140 lb / 300 gsm
A surface that can actually handle water and let pigments flow properly

2️⃣ Not letting layers dry completely
This is where a lot of “my painting looks messy” moments come from.
When you paint into damp layers:
Colors bleed into each other
Edges turn soft whether you want them or not
Details lose their crispness

👉 Instead:
Decide what you want first: soft blend or sharp detail
Wait for full dryness when you need clean edges
Be a little patient here… it really pays off

3️⃣ Going too dark too soon
This one can flatten your painting fast.
If you start with dark pigment right away:
You lose your lightest values
Everything can feel heavy or flat
It’s harder to create form and depth

👉 Try this approach:
Start light and protect your highlights
Build color gradually in layers
Mix lighter versions first (like yellow + green before straight green)
Then slowly work toward your darkest darks

If watercolor has been feeling unpredictable, pick just ONE of these to focus on next time you paint. Small shifts like this make a huge difference over time 🌿

Hope this was helpful!
