It's been almost three decades since the rage virus escaped from a biological weapons laboratory. Still living in a ruthlessly enforced quarantine, some have found ways to exist amid the infected. One such group of survivors lives on a small island connected to the mainland by a single, heavily defended causeway. When one of them decides to venture into the dark heart of the mainland, he soon discovers a mutation that has spread to not only the infected, but other survivors as well.

Union VFX delivered some of the most crucial visual effects for 28 Years Later, handling around 930 shots in total. One of the biggest challenges was the epic “Causeway Chase” sequence, which alone required about 130 shots. For this, the team built a huge 100-meter water tank set inside the studio and later extended it digitally with CG water and night skies, creating a dark and hyper-real look that matched the tone of the film.

A unique aspect of this project was that many scenes were shot on the iPhone 15. That meant the VFX team had to overcome technical hurdles like motion blur, auto-stabilization, and limited dynamic range. Multi-camera rigs were also used – sometimes with 20 cameras, sometimes 10 – to capture complex stunt action from every angle and make sure arrows, prosthetic gore, and blood effects could be blended seamlessly with CG.

The infected characters were brought to life with heavy prosthetics, practical makeup, and body part props, but Union enhanced them digitally to make them even more terrifying. Stunt harnesses and rigs were painted out, digital doubles were created for wider shots, and a brand-new “alpha infected” design was developed with scarier eyes, lips, and facial details to push the horror further.

To achieve all this, Union VFX relied on a wide range of tools like Houdini, Maya, Arnold, Karma, Substance Painter, ZBrush, Nuke, Mocha, and Photoshop. Their overall philosophy was to ground the film in as much practical work as possible and then use VFX to heighten it, keeping the look raw and visceral rather than overly polished. The result is a gripping and immersive visual experience that stays true to the film’s dark, gritty atmosphere.
