In a high-tech future, a rogue security robot (Alexander Skarsgård) secretly gains free will. To stay hidden, it reluctantly joins a new mission protecting scientists on a dangerous planet?even though it just wants to binge soap operas.
Folks VFX contributed some incredible work to Murderbot. The series overall featured around 1,800 VFX shots, and Folks VFX handled close to 200 of them. Their main focus was on Murderbot’s helmet — creating seamless open and close shots — as well as the POV user interface graphics that define the character’s perspective. They also enhanced sets, extended environments, and blended CG elements with the live-action plates so naturally that the effects feel completely invisible.
During production, Alexander Skarsgård was fully body-scanned to help with digital doubles and compositing. Practical props and interactive on-set lighting cues were also used to ensure the CG matched perfectly with what was filmed. In post-production, the compositing team worked on subtle, detailed shots, especially the helmet transitions, so that audiences would never question what was real and what was created digitally.
Alongside Folks VFX, other studios like DNEG, Pixomondo, and Image Engine also contributed to the show’s visual effects. DNEG alone delivered 448 shots across 27 sequences, including complex scenes like the Worm Attack. Still, Folks VFX’s contribution stands out for giving Murderbot its signature identity through the helmet mechanics and the futuristic UI work that became such a memorable part of the series.
VFX Supervisor - Phil Prates
VFX Producer - Tanya Haddad
