The 2026 Toyota Aygo X Hybrid is Toyota's smallest car in Europe, and it is a car America does not sell. The 1.0-litre petrol engine has been deleted and replaced by a 116 hp 1.5-litre full hybrid, making this the first full hybrid in Europe's city-car class. It is quicker, cleaner and better equipped than any Aygo before it, and the entry price has moved up by around £5,000 to £21,595. For the American half of the audience: the Aygo X has never been sold in the United States, so there is no US price for it and we do not invent one. The comparison that does mean something is this. America's cheapest new car for 2026 is the Hyundai Venue at $20,550 MSRP, or $22,150 once the $1,600 destination charge is added, and it is 159.1 inches long against the Aygo X's 148.7 inches. That is roughly ten inches more car for the cheapest thing on the lot. The last new car in America under $20,000, the Nissan Versa, ended US production in December 2025. The smallest Toyota you can buy there is the Corolla, 182.3 inches, from $22,925.
We walk around the redesigned nose, which grew 76 mm to package the hybrid hardware, then go inside for the new 7-inch digital cluster, the touchscreen, the surviving physical climate dials and the console Toyota rebuilt around the battery cells. Then the honest part of the argument: 231 litres of boot, strictly four seats, and a Hyundai i10 that gives European buyers five seats and a bigger boot for about £5,000 less.
Toyota's answer to a dying segment was not to leave it, but to electrify it. Almost every rival is gone. The Peugeot 108 and Citroën C1 that shared this car's Czech factory stopped in 2022, the Ford Ka is finished, and the VW up! trio is history. The question is whether a hybrid city car still makes sense when a €19,500 electric Renault Twingo is already on the way.
