Arizona candidates for governor took part in a public safety policy forum hosted by the Arizona Police Association on Aug. 25. Governor Katie Hobbs and Congressman Andy Biggs addressed attendees, which included representatives from law enforcement agencies around the state alongside elected officials from all levels of Arizona government.
While the two candidates will not be debating ahead of the November election, they each spent roughly 20 minutes individually answering questions from a moderator, with Biggs speaking first followed by Hobbs. The discussion covered a range of topics, including pension reform, recruitment and retention, and border policing. When asked about plans to stop drug trafficking and crime at the southern border, Biggs advocated for fully funding and equipping the Border Security Strikeforce, establishing interagency cooperation, appointing a border czar, and coordinating with federal agencies and federal law enforcement.
Hobbs emphasized that border security is not a partisan issue, highlighting her actions in providing local law enforcement with resources, sending the National Guard to assist with drug interdiction, and deploying over $200 million to local agencies for technology, vehicles, communications, and staffing.The public safety forum took place following recent political polling regarding the race.
A Highground Inc. poll released one day prior showed Hobbs holding a 15-point lead over Biggs. Additionally, a Noble Predictive Insights poll from the previous week reflected a double-digit lead for the incumbent governor.
