NEW ORLEANS, LA – Creole cuisine holds a special place in American food culture. And it doesn’t get any more special than on Holy Thursday at Dooky Chase, when the 84-year-old restaurant, long run by the Queen of Creole Cuisine, Leah Chase, celebrates with a big batch of gumbo z’herbes. The oft-overlooked green gumbo is just one local tradition that Dooky Chase, a crucial meeting place for the Civil Rights Movement, is keeping alive, and that’s why we’re honoring it with a 2025 America’s Classics Award presented by Heinz.
